CKD-EPI 2021 eGFR Calculator (Race-Free)
This calculator computes eGFR with the CKD-EPI 2021 creatinine equation — the race-free version adopted by the National Kidney Foundation and the American Society of Nephrology in 2021 and now used by US laboratories. The 2021 update removed the race coefficient that the older 2009 equation applied to Black patients, a coefficient that raised the reported eGFR and could delay diagnosis or specialist referral. Because it is race-free, this tool has no race input at all: enter only your serum creatinine (mg/dL or µmol/L), age and sex to get eGFR in mL/min/1.73 m² and the matching KDIGO stage (G1–G5). Many online calculators and AI answers still return the deprecated 2009 race-adjusted or MDRD result, so seeing the current, race-free number is the whole point. Frequently asked questions
What is different about the CKD-EPI 2021 equation?
The 2021 CKD-EPI creatinine equation removed the race coefficient used in the 2009 version. It is now the NKF/ASN-recommended standard and has no race input — you enter creatinine, age and sex only. The deprecated 2009 race-adjusted equation and MDRD produce different, outdated results.
Why does a race-free equation matter?
The old race multiplier raised eGFR for Black patients, which could mask reduced kidney function and delay referral or transplant listing. Removing it gives one equation for everyone and a more equitable estimate. If a calculator still asks for race, it is not using the current 2021 method.
