A1C mmol/mol to % Converter (NGSP ↔ IFCC)
Lab reports outside the US usually give A1C in IFCC units (mmol/mol) rather than the NGSP percentage familiar in the US, and the two are easy to confuse. The conversion is mmol/mol = (A1C% − 2.15) × 10.929, so a 7% NGSP A1C equals about 53 mmol/mol, and a 6.5% diabetes threshold is about 48 mmol/mol. How do I convert A1C mmol/mol to percent?
Use A1C% = (mmol/mol ÷ 10.929) + 2.15. For example, 53 mmol/mol is about 7.0%, and 48 mmol/mol is about 6.5%. The reverse is mmol/mol = (A1C% − 2.15) × 10.929. NGSP percent is used in the US; IFCC mmol/mol is standard in much of the rest of the world.
Why do labs use mmol/mol instead of percent?
IFCC mmol/mol is the internationally standardised unit for A1C, tied to a reference measurement method, which makes results comparable across countries and labs. The NGSP percentage is the older, US-aligned scale. Many reports show both; this converter lets you move between them and also see the estimated average glucose.
