Top Percent of Class Calculator
Colleges often ask for your standing as a "top X% of class", which is your rank expressed as a share of the class: top-% = rank ÷ class size × 100, where lower is better. For example, rank 30 out of 500 is 30 ÷ 500 × 100 = the top 6%, which also places you in the 1st decile (the top 10% band). This calculator converts any rank and class size into your top-% and decile, and shows the matching percentile so you can quote whichever figure an application requests. Frequently asked questions
How do I work out what top percent of my class I am in?
Divide your rank by your class size and multiply by 100: top-% = rank ÷ class size × 100. Rank 30 in a class of 500 is 30 ÷ 500 × 100 = the top 6%. Lower is better here — being in the top 6% means only about 6% of the class ranks above you.
What is the difference between top-% and percentile?
They are mirror images. Top-% is your rank as a share of the class (lower is better); percentile is the share of the class you rank above (higher is better). Rank 30 of 500 is the top 6% and the 94th percentile — the two always add up to 100%. This tool shows both so you can match whatever a college asks.
What decile is my rank in?
A decile splits the class into ten 10% bands by rank: decile 1 is the top 10%, decile 2 the next 10%, and so on. It is computed as ceil(top-% ÷ 10). Rank 30 of 500 is the top 6%, so ceil(6 ÷ 10) = the 1st decile. Many US high schools report a decile band instead of an exact rank.
