Pro Rata Salary Calculator — 35-Hour Full-Time Week
Calculate pro-rata pay when the full-time contract is based on a 35-hour working week. Some employers — particularly in NHS, finance, and public sector roles — use a 35-hour baseline rather than the more common 37.5 or 40 hours. Getting the full-time baseline right matters: using the wrong denominator changes every figure. This calculator defaults the full-time hours to 35 for this page, so your pro-rata salary, equivalent hourly rate, and statutory holiday are all computed correctly for a 35-hour contract. All results are gross; enter your actual FTE salary in the field to get your personal figures.
Example: £35,000 FTE (35 hrs/week) at 21 hrs/week → £21,000/year (60% FTE)
- Equivalent hourly rate: £19/hour (same as a full-timer on a 35-hour contract)
- Monthly gross: £1,750/month
- Pro-rata holiday (28-day full-time basis): 16.8 days
Frequently asked questions
Why does the full-time hours baseline matter for pro-rata calculations?
The denominator in the proportion formula is the full-time hours, so using the wrong baseline gives a wrong result. A 35-hour week gives a slightly different proportion — and therefore a different pro-rata salary — compared with 37.5 or 40 hours. Always check your employment contract for the agreed full-time hours before calculating.
What is the hourly rate on a 35-hour contract at £35,000 FTE?
The equivalent hourly rate is £35,000 ÷ (35 × 52) = £19/hour. This is the same rate that both full-time and part-time employees receive, as required by the Part-time Workers (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulations 2000.
