Methodology

How salary-to-hourly conversion works

The conversion is pure arithmetic — no estimates or tables required. All you need is your salary (or hourly rate), your hours per week, and the number of weeks you work per year. The US BLS standard full-time year is 2,080 hours (40 hrs/wk × 52 wks).

Annual salary → Hourly rate

Divide by total annual hours

Salary to hourly
hourly rateannual salaryhrs/wkwks/yr

e.g. $52,000 ÷ (40 × 52) = $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00/hr

Use this mode to find your effective hourly rate from a salaried offer — useful for comparing offers with different hours or evaluating overtime pay.

Hourly rate → Annual salary

Multiply up to annual

Hourly to annual

e.g. $25.00 × 40 × 52 = $52,000/yr

Use this mode to convert a contractor or hourly rate into an annual equivalent — useful for comparing hourly wages to salaried positions.

Biweekly = weekly × 2 · Daily uses 5 working days/week · Monthly = annual ÷ 12 (payroll convention, not 4-week approximation)

The calculator outputs the complete frequency table so you can compare offers on any pay cadence — biweekly, semi-monthly, or monthly.

The 2080-hour year

Why 2,080 hours? The US standard explained

The 2,080-hour full-time work year is the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) convention: 40 hours per week × 52 weeks. It is used by the federal government for salary comparisons, federal pay scales, and government contractor rates. All major competitors (Indeed, talent.com, calculator.net) use this as the default.

Part-time (20 hrs/wk)1,040 hrs/yrHalf-time
2 unpaid weeks (50 wks)2,000 hrs/yrReduce weeks to 50

Paid PTO does not reduce your annual hours for salary calculation — you receive the same salary whether you are working or on paid leave. Only reduce weeks for unpaid leave or unpaid time off.

$52,000/yr at 40 hrs/wk, 52 weeks — the BLS golden case

  1. 1
    Annual hours: 40 hrs/wk × 52 wks = 2,080 hrs/yr (US BLS standard full-time).
  2. 2
    Hourly rate: $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00/hr (exact — no rounding).
  3. 3
    Weekly pay: $52,000 ÷ 52 wks = $1,000/wk.
  4. 4
    Biweekly pay: $1,000 × 2 = $2,000 every two weeks (26 pay periods/yr).
  5. 5
    Monthly pay: $52,000 ÷ 12 = $4,333.33/mo (payroll convention: annual ÷ 12, not 4-week blocks).
  6. 6
    Daily pay: $52,000 ÷ (52 × 5 days) = $52,000 ÷ 260 = $200/day.

Cross-currency

How cross-currency conversion works

When you select different From and To currencies, every output figure is converted using the ECB euro reference rates — official rates published by the European Central Bank and committed to this site weekly. The “rates as of” label shows the exact date of the snapshot so you always know how fresh the data is.

EUR-cross conversion

Amount × rate_to ÷ rate_from

Cross-currency via EUR
convertedamountrate_torate_from

e.g. $52,000 USD → GBP: $52,000 × (GBP rate ÷ USD rate) ≈ £41,080

All 8 non-EUR currencies (USD, GBP, INR, AUD, NZD, CAD, SGD, CHF) are stored as units-per-EUR. EUR itself has a rate of 1, so EUR→USD is simply amount × USD rate. The conversion runs entirely in your browser — no server round-trip.

Honesty: rates as of + staleness banner

Always shows the snapshot date; banner if >10 days old

The tool always shows “Rates as of YYYY-MM-DD” beside the converted result — the date of the ECB snapshot actually used. The weekly cron validates before committing; if it ever fails, the last good file persists and the correct older date stays visible. If rates are more than 10 days old, a staleness banner appears in the results panel so you know to treat the conversion as indicative.

Indicative only — not for FX trading

Converted figures are gross (pre-tax) in the target currency and are intended for salary comparison. ECB reference rates are mid-market — live interbank or retail rates will differ. Do not use this tool for actual currency transactions.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Divide your annual salary by the total hours you work per year. US full-time standard is 40 hours/week × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours. Formula: Hourly Rate = Annual Salary ÷ (Hours/Week × Weeks/Year). Example: $52,000 ÷ 2,080 = $25.00/hr.

The US standard full-time work year is 2,080 hours: 40 hours/week × 52 weeks. This is the convention used by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Part-time at 20 hrs/wk = 1,040 hrs/yr. If you take 2 unpaid weeks, use 50 weeks = 2,000 hours.

$50,000 per year divided by 2,080 hours (40 hrs/wk × 52 wks) equals $24.04 per hour (gross, before tax). At 40 hrs/wk, that is $961.54/week and $4,166.67/month.

$20/hr × 40 hours/week × 52 weeks = $41,600 per year. Monthly: $41,600 ÷ 12 = $3,466.67/month. Weekly: $20 × 40 = $800/week. These are gross figures before federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare.

No — if you receive a fixed annual salary, paid PTO is already built in. You are paid the same whether you are at work or on vacation. Use 52 weeks in the formula. Only reduce weeks for unpaid leave: e.g., use 50 weeks if you take 2 weeks of unpaid leave.

Gross — before federal income tax, state income tax, Social Security (6.2%), and Medicare (1.45%). Your actual take-home hourly rate will be lower. To see your net pay, use the Take-Home Salary Calculator.

Monthly = Annual ÷ 12. Because a year has 52 weeks (not exactly 48), months are not perfectly equal to 4-week blocks. $52,000 ÷ 12 = $4,333.33/month — this is the standard accounting convention used by payroll departments.

The tool uses the European Central Bank (ECB) euro reference rates — official rates published by the ECB every business day and committed to this site weekly. All 8 non-EUR currencies (USD, GBP, INR, AUD, NZD, CAD, SGD, CHF) are expressed as units-per-EUR. The "rates as of" label always shows the date of the snapshot actually used — you will never see a stale date presented as today.

Every figure is computed in your "From" currency first, then converted via the EUR cross: converted amount = original amount × (To-currency ECB rate ÷ From-currency ECB rate). For example, 1 USD → GBP: multiply by (GBP rate ÷ USD rate). EUR is its own base (rate = 1), so EUR→USD is simply amount × USD_rate. All results are gross (pre-tax) in the target currency.
