CGPA to Percentage: Why the Formula Depends on Your University

You Google "CGPA to percentage," land on a page that says "multiply by 9.5," and confidently write 76% on your job application. Then the transcript your university issues says something else entirely. The problem is that ×9.5 is a CBSE school-board rule — and if you went to VTU, Anna, Mumbai, or a JNTU campus, it is simply the wrong formula for you.

The myth of one universal formula

There is no single national CGPA-to-percentage conversion in India. Each university (and often each scheme or regulation within a university) calibrates its own 10-point grading scale differently, so it publishes its own conversion rule. Using another institution's formula produces a number that matches no official record — which is a real problem when an employer or a foreign university later cross-checks against your transcript.

The famous "×9.5" everyone quotes comes from CBSE, the school board. CBSE derived it by averaging the mid-points of its five-grade bands (A1 to E) across several years and found the result was about 9.5 times the grade point. It is accurate for a CBSE Class X or XII CGPA — and misleading for almost every engineering university.

The real per-university formulas

Here are the conversion rules actually published by the major schemes, drawn from each institution's official records:

Three fork-points trip up almost every generic calculator, so they are worth calling out.

VTU changed its formula by scheme

Visvesvaraya Technological University subtracts a fixed offset for its 2015–2018 schemes: (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. But from the 2021 scheme onward it switched to a plain × 10. Same university, two different answers depending on which regulation you were admitted under. A student on an 8.5 CGPA gets 77.5% under the old scheme but 85% under the new one — a 7.5-point swing that decides interview shortlists.

JNTU is per-campus — none of them is a plain ×10

The single biggest error in circulation is treating "JNTU" as one thing. After the parent university split, each campus set its own rule:

  • JNTUH (Hyderabad): (CGPA − 0.5) × 10, per Clause 11.2 of R16/R18/R22.
  • JNTUK (Kakinada): (CGPA − 0.75) × 10, from R16 onward (older R10/R13 used −0.5).
  • JNTUA (Anantapur): (CGPA − 0.5) × 10, for R18/R20/R22 (legacy R15/R16 used −0.75).

No current JNTU campus uses a bare × 10. Grouping them together is wrong for every one of them.

Mumbai is piecewise — and was just repealed

Mumbai University's general formula is CGPA × 7.1 + 11. But its engineering conversion is piecewise: 7.1 × CGPI + 12 when CGPI is below 7, and 7.4 × CGPI + 12 when CGPI is 7 or above. On top of that, Mumbai's formula-based conversion was officially repealed effective 1 January 2026, replaced by a marks-based conversion certificate the college computes directly from your raw Semester I–VI marks. So the formula now only back-calculates pre-2026 transcripts; for anything current, request the official certificate.

Worked examples

Watch how the same CGPA produces different percentages under different rules:

  • CBSE, CGPA 8.0 → 8.0 × 9.5 = 76%
  • VTU 8.5 (2018 scheme) → (8.5 − 0.75) × 10 = 77.5%
  • Mumbai 8.0 (general) → 8.0 × 7.1 + 11 = 67.8%
  • Mumbai 8.0 (engineering, CGPI ≥ 7) → 7.4 × 8.0 + 12 = 71.2%
  • JNTUH 8.0 → (8.0 − 0.5) × 10 = 75%
  • JNTUK 8.0 → (8.0 − 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%

Look at the last two: the identical 8.0 CGPA becomes 75% at JNTUH and 72.5% at JNTUK, purely because the two campuses subtract a different offset. That 2.5-point gap is exactly why "just multiply by a number" fails.

Going the other way (percentage → CGPA)

Reversing the conversion means inverting your university's formula — not dividing by 9.5. For CBSE, CGPA = % ÷ 9.5. But for Mumbai engineering you subtract 12 first and then divide by 7.4; for VTU 2018 you divide by 10 and add 0.75. Which number should you actually write?

Pick the formula for your specific university and the scheme/regulation you were admitted under. Then treat the result as an estimate and, for anything official — job applications, visa paperwork, foreign-university admissions — request your institution's official conversion certificate. Universities issue these precisely because the informal formula and the certified figure can diverge, and admissions offices verify against the certificate, not against a calculator.
